231A was a standout as a yearling during the summer months of 2014 at Red Hill Farms. 231A had unusually short, slick hair – making him extremely valuable for cowherds on fescue pastures and in hot climates. This adaptability feature of 231A translated into excellent individual ratios – 99 BWR, 109 WWR, 117 YWR, 107 %IMF, and 121 REA. We were looking for a Step Out son with all the positive attributes of Step Out – foot size, length of stride, soundness, growth, and carcass traits – without bringing along the birthweight. 231A met and exceeded these criteria. We retained 231A for heavy use at Red Hill Farms.

231A’s dam, X004, is a Gateway cow that has adapted well to our fescue environment and has excellent progeny ratios. She has continued to produce regularly, maintain a BCS of 7, and wean a big, slick haired calf each year. She is an unusually wide-centered cow that cow barely fit through the chutes.

231A’s calves are always the heaviest in each contemporary group at weaning. His calves are very dense, wide-centered, and heavy muscled-cattle that have tremendous growth rate without the extra frame size. His calves are never “out of bounds” on frame size in either direction. All daughters are being retained at Red Hill. We are simply elated with those daughters – tremendous dispositions, tight and perfectly shaped udders with small teats, great fleshing ability, and the same denseness and center body width of their sire.

In the Hook and Wulf sale on February 12, 2021, the top selling bull at $50,000 was a son of 231A. We held semen off the market until 231A was proven and his daughters were in production. We are humbled by the number of outstanding breeders who have used 231A during the last 2-3 years. 231A has now been sold to ABS so semen will be exclusively available from them.

29G is the Beacon son retained at Red Hill. 29G is a super slick haired son of 15E that is moderate in frame size with excellent foot and leg structure. 29G had BW, WW and YW ratios of 108, 108 and 110 along with a 17.08 REA (125 ratio). 15E and her dam, Williams Proph Erica 255-184 (aka W3) have stellar production records in the Red Hill program. W3 and 15E were first to calve as 2-year-old heifers. 15E was flushed as a 2-year-old and again in the spring of 2020 and 2021. 15E sons continue to be at the front-end of the sale offerings.

29G is the most superior calving ease bull we have used at Red Hill. His calves come small, easy, and early. They come with vigor – ready to perform. 29G offers the rare combination of extreme calving ease with excellent growth and carcass values. 29G has a disposition much like 15E, very calm and easy to handle.

We continue to use 29G and are excited to watch his calves continue to perform.

274H is the 231A son that ‘puts it all together’ in meeting the selection goals of Red Hill Farms. Everything begins with the cow at Red Hill, and his dam (145X) and granddam (005K) are elite examples of Fertility, Stability, Structural Soundness, and Udder Quality. It would be difficult to find another bull with this ‘bred in’ longevity along with Index values that rank at the top of the breed. This 1% STAY is real – his dam is still in production at the age of 12-years-old and his granddam was in production to the age of 13-years-old. Two generation lasted from K to K!

342F is an exciting red purebred Simmental bull retained in the Red Hill program. Gordon was first impressed with the CDI Verdict 220Y daughters when he visited the Wilkinson herd in the fall of 2018. The next day he saw Verdict’s dam, 121T, at Chris Nicholson’s ranch and that solidified his impression. Then, when visiting the CDI herd, he saw CDI Secret Agent 407C. We are thankful the Nicholson’s allowed Red Hill to purchase a few straws of semen. 407C is now in the Leachman A.I. Center. We are most excited about the 407C calves, most particularly with 342F. 342F ranked first in his contemporary group for both REA and %IMF. 342F is a balanced, thick, wide walking bull that is slick haired with excellent foot structure. The cow family behind 342F has been stellar at Red Hill. He represents 4 generations of cows that have been major contributors. His granddam, 257B, is the dam of our 239E black purebred herd sire. Note that 342F is linebred to 701T, the sire of CDI Verdict 220Y, Hook’s Expectation 36X, and the 153X Red Hill cow.

283G was a standout in the pasture last summer nursing his impressive dam, 308C, a cow that has now been flushed. Visitors to our herd during the summer of 2020 quickly found 283G because of his striking phenotype. 283G has perfect skeletal design with the softness so necessary for function in Simmentals. In addition, his feet and leg structure is ideal, much like his paternal granddam, CDI MS Yesterday 29B, at Nicholson’s. 308C is a slick haired, easy fleshing cow with an excellent udder, much like her 12-year-old dam, W913, and her paternal granddam, the 765 Angus cow. 283G was used AI for fall matings, and he bred the 2-year-olds naturally. Running in the pasture with the 2-year-olds, he continues to impress us with his soundness.

239E was selected to replace 213B at Red Hill. 239E is a solid black purebred bull that has the red gene. His dam, 257B, is one of the outstanding red Sim cows in our herd and we decided it would be ideal to add her genetics to our black Sim program. Because we are so concerned about offering our customers the optimum opportunity for getting heterosis, we are attempting to make black Sims with as little Angus breeding as possible. 239E is moderate in size with excellent foot and leg structure and he is very calm (DOC-1%). 239E should sire outstanding daughters since the 3 close-up dams in his pedigree, 14S, 257B, and 153X, have all been outstanding producers in the Red Hill program.

Red Hill Muskoka 71C is the 3/4 Simmental bull that topped our 2016 sale going to Mike Tulloch in Ontario, Canada. We were very appreciative for Mike and Brian Pogue studying our cattle and coming to buy this bull. This bull represents many of our SimAngus breeding program goals. We have strived to maintain exceptional growth while adding lots of rib and body in a moderate-framed package. 71C fits the bill. His performance ratios were 94 BWR, 114 WWR, 110 YWR, 127 %IMF, and 110 REA. His dam and her paternal sisters by 36X are a great group of cows at Red Hill. Also, his maternal granddam, 81U, is one of our best Red Coat daughters. Our first calves by Muskoka were born in the fall of 2017, with more born in the spring of 2018. Muskoka 71C is now deceased.

Wally impressed us with his exceptional performance ratios and the phenotype we desire. Tom Hook described Wally as “one of the heaviest muscled and soundest structured with a quiet disposition, great appetite, and boasts herd changing carcass and index profile.” We have been impressed by Shear Force’s calving ease when used at Red Hill Farms. Couple this with the high accuracy carcass genetics of Future Direction, and we were pleased to add Wally to the Red Simmental mix at Red Hill Farms.

106W’s greatest contribution may be his daughters. His first daughters calved at Red Hill in the Spring of 2013. They have excellent udders and mothering skills. Additionally, his daughters are moderate-sized and easy fleshing, and as the data indicates, very docile. Another bonus is that the Wally daughters are as fescue adaptable as any cattle in our system.

106W’s cow family was very well received in the 2013 Hook’s Bred for Balance sale. 106W’s full sister was the top selling cow at $20,000. She also was the dam of the top selling bull, Lot 23 at $15,000. Additionally, Wally 106W’s nine-year old dam sold for $7,500. Wally daughters are a great asset at Red Hill.

Red Coat was our pick of the bulls at the 2007 Gateway Bull Sale (MT). Red Coat posted impressive individual performance data, low birth weight (81 pounds), 112 WR, and 111 YR. Red Coat’s massive thickness was evidenced by his 16.02 REA (122 ratio). In the Gateway Sale of 235 bulls, Red Coat had the 4th largest REA in the entire offering.

With Red Coat’s outstanding feedlot performance, he was an ideal fit for mating to our Red Angus cows. In addition to Red Coat’s terminal traits, we have been equally impressed with the exceptional udder quality of his daughters.

Red Coat has been sampled by several breeders. “Our #1 WW bull calf for 2010 was a son (GW Red Coat 099TS) at almost 950 pounds. We will be using him much more in 2011.” Terry Schlenker, Wilkinson Farms, North Dakota.
